Naota’s story begins, as with all surviving members of his race, three hundred years before the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 discovered a nameless planet in the Beta Quadrant whose humanoid inhabitants had destroyed themselves in a botched attempt at prolonging life which ended instead in a viral outbreak that swept across the planet and corrupted every sexually mature being alive. Ironically, in children the virus worked as it had been intended and granted them unnatural long life. Surviving with only the slightest passage of time as they struggled against the elements and the zombie-like creatures birthed by the plague’s final phase, in which it twisted the bodies of its victims into monstrosities driven mad with rage. For centuries, the children eeked out a meager existence; with the sole reward for survival being the knowledge that when one of them grew into puberty they would become one of the monsters. By the time the Enterprise arrived the dwindling population numbered only in the hundreds, but this was the start of a new chapter. (ref. TOS, episode 8 “Miri”)
The boy now known as Naota was one of some sparse hundred to have walked out of the hellish trauma and into the Federation occupation set up by Captain James T. Kirk’s order to provide education and medical care for the stricken population of Miri’s Planet. Literally overnight, Naota was lifted from the decimated ashes of a post-industrial society and into an age of space exploration. Comprehension escaping him at such modern marvels beyond anything imagined in his time, and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Naota was particularly violent case in acting out against the Federation caretakers. Through a creative combination of Vulcan emotional counseling and Andorian physical activities, Naota was able to be educated and socialized into Federation society.
After licensing as a civilian aerospace pilot, Naota made a name for himself as an amateur stunt pilot, achieving success in several trans-stellar rallies and eventually becoming a pilot on the professional racing circuit. The threat of the Second Federation-Klingon War and the outbreak of the Dominion War shortly led Starfleet to activate an emergency draft of skilled small craft pilots due to the growing use of small combat runabout craft to counter Jem'Hadar fast attack vessels. Following the Breen attack on Earth in 2375, Naota was drafted into the nascent Starfighter Corps, Naota was commissioned as a warrant officer pilot. With minimal training through a Warrant Officer Candidate course designed to get pilots out to the fleet as quickly as possible, Naota's Starfleet career had a much more abrupt start than was normal.
During the war, Naota served with Wraith Squadron aboard the USS Miranda, under the command of Elaithin Jii. After the war, Naota continued flying for Starfleet, serving with Wraith Squadron for a total of 13 years. His maneuvers in organizing his squadron to address a pirate threat in the Seti Alpha sector led to his being requested by name to serve aboard the USS Makin Island as Chief Tactical Officer -- his first assignment away from the cockpit.
After 7 years aboard the Makin Island, Naota served as a flight instructor at Starfleet Academy (ironic, as he, himself, had never completed any of Starfleet Academy's courses). During this tour, his commission was upgraded to that of a regular Starfleet Officer and he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Returning to the Starfighter Corps, he served as the Executive Officer for Saber Squadron on board the USS Galaxy. During this time, he was introduced to a young enlisted crewman named Jericho East, who would serve as Naota's plane captain for Saber 9. Though initially harboring a dislike for one another, during a shipboard disaster, Naota successfully rescued Jericho -- which proved to be the start of a new chapter for the both of them, leading to Jericho East adopting Naota in 2405.
In order to serve in separate chains of command, Naota took the Level 5 pilot's exam and moved to be the Chief Navigation Officer of the USS Galaxy, while Jericho continued to serve as a maintenance technician for Vanguard Squadron. Following their transfer to USS New Jersey, Naota was again assigned as Chief Navigation Officer, while Jericho was assigned to the Engineering Department.
