Excalibur Class
The Excalibur class was submitted at the same time as the Sovereign class. Both ships were roughly equal in proposed specs. The Sovereign was approved while the Excalibur was put on hold.
Following the Borg attack of 2371, Starfleet re-opened the Excalibur files. They altered the ship from Explorer/Battleship specs to include rapid response abilities, nearly doubling the size of the vessel. Weapons were slightly scaled back though as was crew needed for those systems. In their place was put facilities for Covert Ops Teams, Marines, and even Diplomatic and Medical personnel. In the event of a medical emergency, these spaces could be configured for emergency medical care, and thus the ship is equipped with no less then 4 separate EMH programs. Only the Hope class Medical Ship and Starbases carry as many independent EMH programs.
As the Dominion war began, three of the ships were rushed into building and service. Two took active part in the war, rushing troops to Chin'toka and AR-115. One however, the USS Excalibur itself, was lost at the second battle of Chin'toka when Breen energy dampening weapons hit her, causing her to loose power. She was hit by repeated Dominion and Cardassian weapons fire and exploded just before the USS Defiant. Others of the class also rushed medical aid to Betazed when that planet was liberated, and later Cardassia Prime itself.
Since the end of the war, only four more of the class has been built, making nine in active service. Two other hulls that were under construction where stopped and stored, in case the need arises for them. This ship is by far the largest vessel in service in Starfleet and it is too large to enter Starfleet's Spacedock type Starbases' internal bay.
In the early 2390s the class was upgraded with new Type-XIII phaser arrays, slipstream drive, improved computer hardware with the latest LCARS version, and improved power allocation systems.
2365:
Design work begins after Borg encounters. New M/ARA design is standardized for the Sovereign Class. Plans submitted to Starfleet, but project placed on hold in favor of the Sovereign class.
2371:
With Dominion the threat growing more and more Starfleet re-opens Excalibur's plans. Spaceframe design is approved and full specifications are forwarded to Avalon for designations. USS Excalibur production begins with a projected 4 year turnover for the prototype ship. Torpedo turret from Sovereign class incorporated. Saucer section nears 30% chassis completion.
2372:
The Stardrive section nears chassis completion. Primary and secondary chassis's now at 100% completion. Computers are delivered for fitting work. Work continues on habitat and outer hull sections for USS Excalibur. Mid year computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from station control to ship control. Prototype warp cores designed and used. They are intended to increase the power from a trelinium core. Problems arise in manufacturing, but coils ready by year end.
2373:
Computer system now operating at 60% of maximum. System expected to become self aware within the year. Warpcore begins primary testing. Ablative Armor integrated. Three more of the class near chassis completion, but problems with prototype warp coils continue. Rest of the class would use modified Galaxy Dreadnought coils. An additional two begin work. Antimatter regulation control is found to be outside acceptable levels. Stardrive section near completion with final attachment of navigational deflector array. Bridge module attached to Primary hull.
2374:
Type-XII phaser arrays installed for primary defense, but several Type-X arrays are also installed too. Design team unsure if power reserves would hold up for the ship to use all type-12s. Warp Core passes Review Three and is tested to 85% peak. Computer system fully self aware and umbilical from the station are cut as the ship become self sufficient. Impulse systems pass Review Three and being autonomous low level power control. Secondary Back up Generators are shut down and become Auxiliary system control. USS Excalibur leaves dry dock for primary testing.
2375:
USS Excalibur returns to Avalon mid year and warp stress coating is applied. USS Excalibur begins deep space assessments. USS Excalibur returns to the Avalon for final exterior markings and paint. On 3, July 2375 the USS Excalibur is officially commissioned by Starfleet during a brief ceremony. Bridge plaque is put in pride of place and Captain Alex Wright takes command. USS Excalibur is ordered to the Cardassian boarder.
